  • A local business purchased “leads” from a lead aggregator in their industry. Later they discovered the lead aggregator had changed the company’s phone number in the Online Business Directories to a number that was directed to the lead aggregator.

o   As a result, the company was paying for leads that would normally be free.

  • In the interest of generating website visits, a company’s PPC management firm allocated significant budget to buying keywords with the names of nearby towns. That boosted the appearance of good results.

o   As a result, the company was paying for visits that could be obtained for free with simple enhancements to their website.

  • A company’s PPC ads included ads that were specific to individual products the company offered. When someone searching for a specific product saw the relevant ad and clicked on it, they were sent to the company’s home page.

o   As a result, the person was expected to begin their search again at the company’s website to locate the product they were interested in, and instead would be more likely to simply return to the search results to try the next ad.
